Vita Sackville-West makes a deeply transparent pun in her judgment (though she doesn’t realise it) which shows that ‘Sales’ is Sir Robert Witt, the art historian (1872-1952), a close friend of the WR backer, Sam Courtauld. There is a good account of his life here.
