London-born John (William) van Druten, whose father was Dutch, was a successful playwright and director, with 28 plays performed between 1924, when he was only 21, and 1952. Several were turned into films. He was also the first to direct The King and I. He also wrote two novels and two autobiographies. He’d started out as a lawyer, but quickly found success in the theatre. In 1940, he emigrated to America and became a US citizen in 1944. He died in California in 1957.
