Leslie Vaughan Upward was the son of a solicitor who retired young (the 1901 census has him retired at 45; the 1911 census has him as a retired ‘tutor’, which is presumably a mis-hearing), and part of a family that evidently travelled – his sister was born about three years before him, in Australia. He himself was born in 1891 in Kingskerswell in Devon, and died in 1959, at the age of 68.
